Completed in collaboration with MMW Architects, this kitchen remodel brought us back to a bungalow we first renovated in 2008. That earlier project added a second story while preserving the home’s original character and later received Fine Homebuilding’s first HOUSES Award for Remodel of the Year. This next phase focused on rethinking the kitchen, pantry, stairs and breakfast nook as one cohesive part of the home.
The new layout pairs maple cabinetry with solid-surface countertops, renewed fir flooring and a shop-built breakfast nook with a custom wood table. Behind the finished details, we reframed the stairs, pantry and nook; added insulation where the existing structure allowed; upgraded the lighting and electrical; and installed a new exterior door. The original sink was also retained and converted to an undermount installation.
At the center of the kitchen is a custom welded zinc range hood fabricated by MT Copper. Its smooth, naturally waxed surface is finished with lightly aged brass strapping and round-head rivets, giving the room a focal point that feels substantial without overpowering the quieter material palette around it. Even Houzz caught notice and featured this remodel as “Kitchen of the Week.”
