Some of the most important work in a high-performance home disappears once the walls are closed. Now in framing, this modern home in Missoula’s Upper Rattlesnake is taking shape on the foundation of the structure that previously occupied the site. Reusing that foundation reduced the need to start over, while new openings will bring egress and daylight to the lower level.
The envelope is central to the project. Staggered 2×6 framing within 2×8 exterior walls limits thermal bridging, while a four-inch Rockwool wrap, detailed vapor barrier and locally made Glo windows will create a tighter, more efficient home. Exterior blinds will integrate with the standing-seam metal siding, and a palette of steel and stone adds durability and fire resistance.
A solar roof with battery backup will serve the home, while the shop farther down the private drive was designed around a large solar array. Inside, three bedrooms, two offices, two full baths and two powder rooms complete a home built for privacy, resilience and year-round performance.
