With origins believed to date back to the early 1880s, this University District home had been through generations of additions and alterations before the remodel.
Completed in 1997 with Adler Architecture, the project restored the home around a simplified Victorian aesthetic while bringing major structural, mechanical, and electrical systems up to date. Layers of later finishes were removed to reveal original materials, including the early sawn-timber cabin structure at the heart of the house.
The renovation preserved existing masonry fireplaces, added stained and painted fir trim, tiled bathrooms, energy-efficient windows, and vertical grain hardwood floors designed to complement the client’s antique rugs.
Featured in This Old House, the finished home brought its long history into a more unified and livable form.
